Heavy Arms and legality

What are the laws regarding DIY heavy arms, like say, an old fashioned cannon? Would it be illegal for me to manufacture a cannon and if so, under what laws. I figure, if they could build them with 16th century technology, I can build them with 21st.

This is NOT legal advice, but from what I understand, it's legal to own a cannon (not sure of the size limits) fired with black powder.

Google it, I've seen several websites devoted to BP cannon and mortars.

With their slow rate of fire and pathetic (in)accuracy, I wouldn't think that one would be of much use, other than shock factor. I mean, if you really need to use a cannon and grape shot, you're dead anyway.

Yes, slow rate of fire but what about accuracy? How can it be improved and controlled?

Also, I'm not interested in firing soda cans, I want some anti-artillery pieces, and something in case I want to siege a castle -- you know, some support for my longbowmen:elefant:

What size projectile do you intend to shoot, and where or how do you intend to procure these projectiles?

The fellow I speak of went with soda can size projectiles because the cannon is much more manageable/portable, it is extremely accurate, and it is easily for him to make projectiles, which include lead projectiles with lands and grooves that match his cannon barrel's rifling

Accurate enough for me... I want the biggest, heaviest projectiles that I can afford. What can be fired from these cannon? Lead would be fine by me. Give me the info that you have.

I just looked in the phone book and his machine shop is no longer listed. I suspect he re-located out to the boonies. In order to track him down I need to get in touch with our mutual friends. I will get back to you on it.

Cool man, much obliged...

For light loads, you could shoot Pool/Billard Balls, then for heaviery targets, large Ball Bearings; they come in about any size...

Just a few quick ideas, I'm sure we could brainstorm up some better ones...
